New Safety App ‘Rave Guardian’ Available to Cal Poly Students and Employees
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly students and employees can now download the free Rave Guardian app and turn their smartphone into a personal safety device.
The new mobile app being introduced to campus by Cal Poly Public Safety offers students, faculty and staff easy access to send anonymous tips to and communicate easily with the Cal Poly Police Department (CPPD), set a safety timer when walking from place to place on campus, text Mustang Patrol, and connect to 24-hour police or support services.
“We have an active campus full of dedicated students, faculty and staff who are working, studying and performing research at all hours,” said George Hughes, Cal Poly’s assistant vice president for public safety and chief of police. “This app is a simple, non-intrusive way to help increase the safety and security for users and offer peace of mind to friends and family members.”
Included among the many features in the app is a Safety Timer. Serving as a virtual companion on walks across campus, the Safety Timer alerts “Guardians” — selected friends, family or CPPD — of a planned departure and arrival time and then notifies them when the user reaches their destination. If the user does not reach their destination by the designated time and the Safety Timer is not deactivated, the selected Guardian will be notified of the user’s location.
The app also allows for confidential, two-way texting and exchange of images directly with CPPD to report any suspicious activity, discreetly though a smartphone.
Users can easily connect with 911 or CPPD officials through the pre-programmed emergency call button. If the situation is unsafe for the user to speak, they can send a text message and a picture and share or stream their location in real time.
Campus community members can also submit a tip anonymously via text message directly to CPPD. Only CPPD will see the tip, and users can choose to remain anonymous.
Signing up is a quick and simple three-step process. Download the Rave Guardian mobile app from the Apple Store or Google Play. When prompted, enter the device’s phone number. When the user enters their Cal Poly email address, that device will connect to the Cal Poly community and be authenticated.
A significant addition to Public Safety’s portfolio of services, the Rave Guardian app connects the campus community with help, security and resources.
