Cal Poly Rose Float Seeks Design Ideas for 2023 Rose Parade Entry
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly Rose Float is looking for design ideas for its entry in the 134th Rose Parade®.
The winner of the 2023 Rose Float Concept Contest will have their design showcased in front of a crowd of 700,000 Pasadena parade goers and an international television audience in the tens of millions. The winner also will have a choice between two tickets to the 2023 Rose Bowl football game or $500.
The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4. The winning concept will roll down the 5.5-mile-long parade route Monday, Jan. 2, 2023. (The parade traditionally takes place on New Year’s Day but is held on Jan. 2 in years when New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday.)
The 2023 parade theme is “Turning the Corner.” Whether it’s an actual corner or figurative one like the unlimited potential that the new year brings, “Turning the Corner” offers a fresh start and an opportunity to rise above past challenges — alone, with family or friends, or an entire community. All share in the hope, beauty and expectations of what 2023 portends.
Email submissions, with the subject line “2023 Concept,” to email@example.com. Sketches can be in color or black and white and should not exceed 11 inches by 17 inches. Entries must include the applicant’s name, phone number and email. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual can submit.
Students on the Rose Float leadership teams from Cal Poly and California State Polytechnic University in Pomona will review the submissions and vote on the winning concept, which will provide the basis for the 2023 final design.
The Cal Poly Rose Float is the only student-built float in the Rose Parade®. The students’ Stargrazers float, which brought to life a scene from the classic Mother Goose rhyme “Hey Diddle, Diddle,” received the Animation Award at this year’s parade. It was the program’s 61st honor in 73 parade appearances beginning in 1949.
