Cal Poly Virtual Music Faculty Showcase Set for Oct. 23
“The recital, which is part of Cal Poly’s Mustang Family Week, is a fun opportunity for our faculty to collaborate and to demonstrate the breadth of talent across our teaching studios,” said recital coordinator Christopher J. Woodruff. “There will be a live Q&A session with faculty immediately following the recital.”
Cal Poly’s applied faculty are recognized across the region for their expertise in solo and chamber ensemble performance. For this showcase recital, intimate works that highlight their artistic achievements will be presented.
Woodruff, on trumpet, will perform “Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury” by Benjamin Britten; Mark Miller, trombone, will perform “On Your Own Now” by Steven Verhelst; Emily Lanzone, violin, and Laura Gaynon, cello, will play the first two movements — Adagio and Allegro — from the Violin Sonata in C Major, Op. 5, No. 3, by Arcangelo Corelli; Lisa Nauful and Nick Waldron, bassoon, will be joined by Cal Poly alumna Emmie Banninger (Music, ’17) to play some bassoon trios; and Arthur White and David Becker, saxophone, and Ken Hustad, bass, will perform “Inner Urge” by Joe Henderson. Heidi Butterfield, oboe, will play “Two Pieces for Two Oboes and English Horn” by Gordon Jacob. The selection is written as an oboe trio, for which all parts will be played and recorded by Butterfield.
Paul Woodring, who is also the university organist, will perform “Theme and Variations” by Hendrik Andriessen on the Forbes Pipe Organ in the Performing Arts Center. Woodring will play piano with two other recitalists: Hustad, bass: Adagio from the ballet “Unforgettable 1919” by Dmitri Shostakovich; and Alba Franco-Cancél, pert-soprano: “Pueblito, mi Pueblo” (“Little Village, My Village”) by Carlos Guastavino and “Zapateado” from “La tempranica” by Gerónimo Giménez.
Music majors at Cal Poly are required to be enrolled in applied or private lessons each quarter. Many non-music majors who are enrolled in larger ensembles like the Cal Poly Symphony, Cal Poly Wind Bands, Cal Poly Choirs and University Jazz Bands also have lessons with faculty.
The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department and College of Liberal Arts.
