SAN LUIS OBISPO — Internationally known touring ensemble Boston Brass will present a master class for Cal Poly music students at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Room 218 in the Davidson Music Center (No. 45) on campus.
Musicians Jeff Conner and Jose Sibaja, trumpet; Chris Castellanos, horn; Domingo Pagliuca, trombone; and William Russell, tuba, will work with Cal Poly brass students. Student soloists and chamber groups will perform and then receive input from the professionals.
The master class is free and open to the public, however, parking permits are required. The event is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department and Instructionally Related Activities program.
Members of Boston Brass make over 100 annual solo and group performances at concerts, educational clinics, and jazz festivals. The group regularly performs with orchestras, wind ensembles, brass bands, marching bands and a variety of other ensembles.
“Boston Brass has a lively repartee, touched with humor and personality, attempting to bridge the ocean of classical formality to delight audiences with great music and boisterous fun,” said Cal Poly Director of Bands Christopher J. Woodruff.
Boston Brass is a Yamaha Performing Group and has been featured at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Music Conference, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Japan Band Clinic, Music Educators National Conferences, American Bandmaster Association Conference, the American Band College, Western International Band Clinic, and Texas Bandmasters Association Convention.
The ensemble has appeared on the CBS Early Show and National Public Radio’s Performance Today. It has performed for the Great American Brass Band Festival and has recorded many diverse albums. Its latest recording, “Concerto Grosso,” is a collaboration with Eric Rombach-Kendall and the University of New Mexico Wind Ensemble.
The Cal Poly Bands will feature Boston Brass at its annual Bandfest concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center. Boston Brass will perform “Pluto, the Lost Planet” with the Wind Orchestra and “Malagueña” with the Wind Ensemble. Bandfest tickets are available from the Cal Poly Ticket Office.
