Cal Poly Choirs to Present Third Annual ‘Holiday Kaleidoscope’ on Dec. 7

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Choirs will continue its tradition of community collaboration in a performance with two local student choirs in the third annual “Holiday Kaleidoscope” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in Miossi Hall of the Performing Arts Center.

This year’s concert will include the Cabrillo High School Madrigal Singers directed by Jennifer Peterson, and the Central Coast Youth Chorus directed by Melody Svennungsen. The directors are both Cal Poly Music Department alumnae: Peterson is a 1995 graduate, and Svennungsen is a 2007 graduate.

Cal Poly Director of Choral Activities Scott Glysson established this collaborative concert to showcase and celebrate the choral traditions of the Central Coast. The four university choirs and the two guest ensembles will each perform a short selection of repertoire, and the groups will unite for some larger works.

A student orchestra of 25 instrumentalists from the Cal Poly Symphony will be featured. The orchestra will accompany the choirs on several pieces and will provide music for various carols, with which the audience will have an opportunity to sing along.

The University Singers, Cal Poly’s largest ensemble, will perform works by C.P.E. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, and more. The Cal Poly Chamber Choir will perform Hans Leo Hassler’s famous “Dixit Maria” as well as a new arrangement of “Deck the Hall” by Cal Poly faculty member Laura M. Kramer. Cal Poly’s newest choir, the Cal Poly Women’s Chorus, will perform selections from Benjamin Britten’s celebrated “Ceremony of Carols.” PolyPhonics will close the program with Felix Mendelssohn’s “Ave Maria” and John Mackey’s “The Rumor of a Secret King.”

Cal Poly staff member Paul Woodring will accompany the choirs on piano and organ.

Tickets are $12 and $14 for the public, and $9 and $12 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
