Cal Poly Symphony to Feature Student Soloists and Music of Space at Winter Concert March 3
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly Symphony’s Winter Concert will showcase the talents of student soloists at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3, in Harold J. Miossi Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center. In addition, the orchestra will perform music from “Star Trek” and Holst’s “The Planets.”
The Student Soloist Showcase will include performances by six instrumentalists, all winners of the Cal Poly Music Department’s Solo Competition in November.
The soloists are Grant Smith, who will perform Josef Rheinberger’s Organ Concerto No. 2, third movement; Victor Wei, who will play Takashi Yoshimatsu’s Saxophone Concerto “Cyber-bird,” Op. 59, second movement; Justin Privitera, who will play Franz Strauss’ Horn Concerto, Op. 8, third movement; Nico Borst, who will perform Joseph Haydn’s Piano Concerto No. 11 in D Major, first movement, and the duo Clay X. Froelich, violin, and Laila Zaidi, viola, who will play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante,” KV 364, first movement.
The soloists represent a variety of majors and several colleges on campus: civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, software engineering, mathematics, and music.
The orchestra will also perform Michael Giacchino’s suite from “Star Trek: Into Darkness,” and Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter,” from “The Planets.”
Tickets are $12 or $14 for the public and $9 or $12 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
