'San Francisco Symphony Member to Perform at March 10 Cal Poly Wind Bands Concert
Jessica Valeri to be Featured on Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Winter Band Concert will feature the 50-member Wind Ensemble and 55-member Wind Orchestra at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in Harold J. Miossi Hall of the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
The concert — the second in the bands’ season series — is titled “Time in Space.”
The Cal Poly Wind Orchestra will open the program with music from the long-running British science fiction TV show, “Doctor Who,” followed by works from the expanded wind band repertoire, including Claude Debussy’s “Girl With the Flaxen Hair” and John Mackey’s “The Rumor of a Secret King.”
The Cal Poly Chamber Winds and Wind Ensemble will perform in the program’s second half. Guest horn soloist Jessica Valeri will perform W.A. Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 in E-flat Major, K. 447, with the Wind Ensemble. The program will conclude with Paul Hindemith’s Symphony in B-flat Major.
Valeri has been a member of the San Francisco Symphony since 2008. She was previously a member of the St. Louis Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, the Grant Park Orchestra and the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. She spent many years freelancing in the Chicago area, where she performed with a variety of groups, including Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and the International Contemporary Ensemble.
She has participated in many recording projects, including a Grammy-nominated recording with the Bay Brass, and has played with the Grand Teton, the Arizona and the Lakes Area music festivals. She currently serves as a coach for the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and is a sought-after clinician and teacher. She also serves as a musician advisor in the planning and programming of the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures in Music educational concerts.
Christopher J. Woodruff, director of bands, will conduct the concert.
Tickets are $12 and $14 for the public, and $9 and $12 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are available at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call SLO-4TIX (756-4849).
The Music Department offers a 10 percent discount to patrons who buy tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
