Cal Poly’s Polyrhythmics to Perform on Campus May 18

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Polyrhythmics, Cal Poly’s percussion ensemble, will give its annual concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 18, in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion.

This year’s concert will include new works that combine African polyrhythmic drumming with American minimalism to create a kaleidoscope of rhythm and color, said music faculty member John Astaire, director of Polyrhythmics.

Daniel Levitan’s “Marimba Quartet” will also be featured during the concert, which will conclude with Sven-David Sandström’s massive and virtuosic powerhouse, the rarely performed and appropriately titled “Drums.” The ensemble also has a few surprises in store for the program.

The recital is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts and Music Department. For more information, call the Music Department at 805-756-2406 or visit the department’s calendar website at music.calpoly.edu/calendar/.
