Cal Poly Bandfest Concert with New Director of Bands Set for Nov. 30
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Nearly 300 students will perform at Cal Poly’s annual Bandfest at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in Harold J. Miossi Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
The show will feature the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble in an evening of works ranging from the sensitive to the powerful.
The concert will begin with Jack Stamp’s “Gavorkna Fanfare.” Other works on the program include José Rafael Pascual-Vilaplana’s “Sit de Plata,” and Percy Grainger’s “Colonial Song.” The Cal Poly Chamber Winds will present Gordon Jacob’s setting of English folk songs, “Old Wine in New Bottles.”
“As we launch this season’s Cal Poly Bands series, we begin an exploration of how the wind band can be used to express a cultural ‘voice,’” said Christopher J. Woodruff, Cal Poly’s new director of bands. “From Jacob’s setting of old English tunes to Vilaplana’scomposition in the style of a Catalonian two-step dance called “pasdoble,” our students — and audience — get a taste of history and character that extends beyond our normal experience. The big piece for the Wind Ensemble is a marvelous multi-movement take on Cajun song and dance by Frank Ticheli — it’s also a fun showcase for our percussion section!”
The Mustang Band will conclude the concert with arrangements the group is performing at this fall’s football games in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Along with traditional school songs, the band will perform music by Aretha Franklin and music from “The Incredibles.” The band will be introduced by Mike Moreno, the “voice” for Cal Poly Football. A dedication to the memory of Alex G. Spanos, a Cal Poly alumnus and donor who died on Oct. 9 will be included.
