Student-Run ‘Succulentopia’ Plant Sale to Be Held May 11-12 at Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO — More than 75 varieties of succulents will be available at Cal Poly’s “Succulentopia” plant sale from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 11, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Horticulture Unit near the Poly Plant Shop.
More than 1,200 plants will be available for purchase. Five students are involved in the student-run project, one of several such hands-on experiences offered by the Horticulture and Crop Science Department in the university’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.
Student succulent manager Allana Childs, who oversaw the student production team, said the experience of using credible industry sources to research succulent types and reaching out to experts helped solidify her knowledge of propagation, irrigation and fertigation.
“I’ve also been able to experience the Learn by Doing motto to its fullest extent for this event,” said Childs, an agricultural and environmental plant sciences senior. “It has been great preparation for my future as a succulent grower in Castroville, California, which I will start after graduation.”
Four additional agricultural and environmental plant sciences students also assisted with the succulent production: senior Molly Vanderlip, senior Jesse Zubiate-Kelly, junior Karianne Rydberg, and sophomore Boden Cunningham. Lecturer Mike Bush oversaw the project.
“I am simply knocked out at the quality of our plants,” Bush said. “The student succulent team has been extremely professional in their production, and the results of their efforts could not be better.”
The cost of the plants is determined by size: four-inch pots, $4.50; 4.5-inch pots, $5.50; 6-inch succulent garden, $12.50; 8-inch succulent garden, $25; and additional large plants priced accordingly. Varieties include Crassula, Echeveria, Sedum, Sedeveria, Aloe, Gasteria, Haworthia, Kalanchoe, Graptopetalum, Graptoveria, Senecio, Agave, Peperomia, Aeoniums, Callisia, Cyanotis, Adromischus, Sempervivum, and Orostachy, among others.
