Cal Poly Bands Begin Season of ‘Earth and Sky’ at Bandfest Concert Nov. 12

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Nearly 300 students will perform at Cal Poly’s annual Bandfest at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

The show will feature the Cal Poly Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble in an afternoon of bold and powerful works for the modern symphonic band, including a celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centenary.
“Composers featured on the program touch on what it means to be ‘earthly,’” said Christopher J. Woodruff, interim director of bands. “From Roger Cichy’s musical descriptions in ‘Bugs’ to Bernstein’s Overture to ‘Candide,’ we consider the levels of existence observed on the planet we call home, an exercise that leads to a measurement of the horizon line that separates the earth from the sky.”
The afternoon will also include the Mustang Marching Band performing high-energy selections from this year’s athletic band catalogue.
The concert will begin with the Wind Orchestra with performances of Bernstein’s Overture to “Candide” and David Maslanka’s “Give Us This Day.”
The Wind Ensemble will continue with performances of Percy Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy,” Roger Cichy’s “Bugs,” and Bernstein’s “Profanation” from his Symphony No. 1.
The Mustang Band will conclude the concert with arrangements the group is performing at this fall’s football games in Spanos Stadium. Along with traditional favorites, the band will perform music from “Les Miserables” and hip-hop artist Macklemore. The band will be introduced by Mike Moreno, the “voice” for Cal Poly Football.
Tickets to the concert are $12 or $14 for the public and $9 or $12 for students. Event parking is sponsored by the PAC. Tickets are sold at the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).
