Cal Poly Orchesis Dance Company to Present ‘’80s Mix Tape’ Jan. 19-20 and 25-27

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department will present the Orchesis Dance Company’s 48th annual concert, “’80s Mix Tape,” Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19-20, and Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 25-27, in the Spanos Theatre on campus.

For 47 years, Cal Poly’s Orchesis Dance Company has premiered works of concert dance to music from any era of the choreographer’s choosing. For the 48th concert, all dances have been created to music recorded between 1980-89. “’80s Mix Tape” is directed by Assistant Professor Christy McNeil Chand and features the choreography of Cal Poly faculty and students, as well as guest artists in the genres of modern, ballet, musical theatre and jazz.

“If you’ve seen an Orchesis concert before, be prepared for a very different experience this year,” Chand said. “This show features commercial-style video breaks between the pieces, and the dances range from tear-jerking to the absurd.”

New York City-based Sumi Clements and Taryn VanderHoop of Summation Dance Company created a new work as part of their HabitUS tour, which will also visit university dance programs in Kentucky, New York and North Carolina. Additional production collaborators include Cal Poly’s Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies program under the direction of Professor David Gillette, staff member Clint Bryson as technical director and lighting designer, local choreographer Lisa Deyo, and a guest performance by dancer Drew Silvaggio.

The student choreographers include anthropology major Sarah Dirk, architectural engineering major Erica Croft, journalism major Mady Minas, wine and viticulture major Megan Charney and sociology major Anna Charney. By mandating a theme, these students, who were not yet born when the songs they chose were released, were exposed to a musical era before their time.

Tickets for “’80s Mix Tape” are $20 for the public and $12 for students, seniors and children. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. on all days, with a matinee also scheduled at 2 p.m. Jan. 20. Tickets can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).

In addition to the Theatre and Dance Department, the performance is sponsored by Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts and the Instructionally Related Activities program.
