Cal Poly to Host Demo Day Event on Sept. 8

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) hosts its annual Demo Day on Friday, Sept. 8, at the Performing Arts Center on campus.

The event culminates CIE’s 2017 SLO HotHouse Summer Accelerator program — an intense 13-week program that helps students and recent graduates who have developed new products and ventures. Representatives of the six participating companies will give demonstrations, pitches and answer questions about their entrepreneurial efforts.

University chapter again named Institute of Transportation Engineers’ international Chapter
of the Year  

SAN LUIS OBISPO — For the third time in four years, Cal Poly’s Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) club has been named the Institute’s international Chapter of the Year.

The student group was honored at the ITE annual conference, held July 30 to Aug. 2 in Toronto, for the outstanding activities and achievements reflected in its annual report.

Cal Poly Awarded Funding for a New Graduate Fellowship Focused on the Global Reduction of Food Waste

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Food Science and Nutrition Department has been awarded a nearly $250,000 grant through the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Needs and Postgraduate Fellowship Grants Program to focus on the conversion of agricultural and food waste challenges into opportunities.

The funding will be used over a four-year period to enroll six students in the master’s in agriculture program with a specialization in food science. The students’ coursework will be focused on global issues related to agricultural and food waste. The cross-disciplinary program will involve 11 faculty members from across the university, including food science and nutrition, industrial packaging, animal science, and engineering. Food science Professor Stephanie Jung and Associate Professor Amanda Lathrop will oversee the program.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly is the best public-master’s university in California, and its graduates are among the highest-earning in the nation, according to Forbes’ 2017 Top Colleges rankings.

Cal Poly was listed seventh in the state on the America’s Top Colleges list among public universities, behind first-place UC Berkeley (29th overall) and University of California campuses at Los Angeles (48th), Santa Barbara (83rd), San Diego (93rd), Davis (102nd) and Irvine (106th) — all highly active research institutions that offer doctorate degrees as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees. 

Cal Poly Research Finds Reslient Algae May Help Abalone During Ocean Acidification

SAN LUIS OBISPO — New research from Cal Poly and California Sea Grant sounds a hopeful note for the resilience of California abalone in the face of ocean acidification. The study, conducted by Cal Poly biologist Jennifer O’Leary, focuses on crustose coralline algae and their effects on abalone’s ability to reproduce. 

“This research is novel in that it shows that some critical interactions between species can be maintained, even for sensitive species,” O’Leary said. “This is good news for California abalone, as loss of the algae would mean catastrophic declines in abalone replenishment.” 

Members of Inaugural Cal Poly Spanish-language Debate Team Ranked as World Finalists

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly Spanish-language debate team members Megan Boyd and Yessenia Sanchez finished as finalists at the Campeonato Mundial Universitario de Debate en Español (CMUDE).

Held July 15-24 at the University of Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala City, CMUDE is the largest international Spanish-language university debate competition. Throughout the 10-day competition, Boyd, a biology senior from Lake Forest, Calif., and Sanchez, a business senior from Hollister, Calif., competed with about 300 other participants from around the world.

Cal Poly Makes Money Magazine’s 2017 List of ‘Best Colleges for Your Money’

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Money magazine has named Cal Poly to its list of 2017-18 Best Colleges for Your Money, based on educational quality, affordability and graduate earnings.​

Cal Poly is one of 19 California State University campuses included in Money magazine’s list, the fourth annual value ranking of schools. Cal Poly was listed at 104 out of 711 U.S. universities and colleges.

Cal Poly Graphic Communication Department Receives Two Cutting-Edge Kongsberg Digital Cutting Tables

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Graphic Communication Department received two Kongsberg digital cutting tables from Esko Graphics, which will allow students to further explore finishing and packaging technologies both in the classroom and in graphic communication clubs. In addition to these two machines, Esko donated tooling for the two tables, training, software, installation and delivery. The approximate value of the Kongsberg configuration as equipped is $185,000.
