Cal Poly Honors Faculty, Staff for $32 Million in Research Grant Spending in 2016-17

Holders of two patents also honored, along with two faculty members who secured a combined $30 million in external funding over their careers at the university

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly honored university researchers who spent more than $32 million in research funding; obtained 310 new grants valued at nearly $22 million; and secured two patents in the 2016-17 fiscal year.

The patented inventions include an improved statistical method for more accurate assessment of recycled plastic content for manufacturing as well as a specialized filter designed to work with a portable water-treatment bag.

Cal Poly to Present Bach Week Jan. 16-20

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Music Department will present Bach Week from Tuesday through Saturday, Jan. 16-20, with presentations and performances on campus and in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. 

Bach Week features a range of events, including a chamber music performance on period instruments, collaborative performances of large vocal and instrumental works by students and professionals, two master classes, and a guest lecture or “Akademie.” The free demonstrations and lectures provide additional context for the performances. 

Cal Poly Art and Design Professor to Discuss ‘Lives Well Lived’ Jan. 19

SAN LUIS OBISPO — A discussion about the feature documentary “Lives Well Lived,” by filmmaker Sky Bergman, Cal Poly professor in the Art and Design Department, will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, in the Advanced Technologies Lab Keck Lab (Building No. 7) on campus.

Bergman will be joined by Debra Valencia-Laver, associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, in a lively dialogue about Bergman’s experience producing and directing the film.

Cal Poly Fall 2018 Enrollment Applications Top 65,000 to Set Another School Record

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly received a record number of applications with more than 65,000 first-time freshmen and transfer students seeking to enroll for the 2018-19 school year.

“This is the largest undergraduate applicant pool in Cal Poly history with 65,507 undergraduates submitting on-time applications,” said James Maraviglia, associate vice provost for marketing and enrollment development. “This includes 54,732 first-time freshmen and 10,775 upper-division transfer students seeking to attend Cal Poly.”

Cal Poly Student Affairs Staff Members Recognized by Industry Peers

SAN LUIS OBISPO — A handful of Cal Poly Student Affairs staff members were chosen by the American College Personnel Association’s (ACPA) Career Services Commission to receive its annual Innovation Award.

Four members of Cal Poly’s Freshman Focus Team — counselors Ashley Eberle, Mallory Stoffel, Travis Raynaud and Katie Ottoson — are being recognized for their dedication to student success.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly has been named a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists, recognizing the university’s work toward projects, policies and programs that exhibit a strong commitment to cycling.

Cal Poly was recognized for the first time as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly University, joining a cutting-edge group of more than 180 colleges and universities across the U.S. that are providing more bicycle-friendly campuses for the benefit of students, staff, faculty and community members.

Cal Poly Employees Donate More than 400 Toys to Jack’s Helping Hand

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Children with cancer and other special needs in the community will receive toys and gift cards that were donated by Cal Poly employees.

University faculty and staff and Associated Students Inc. and Cal Poly Corporation employees donated more than 400 toys and $300 in gift cards during a Dec. 7 holiday reception hosted on campus by Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong and his wife, Sharon.

Cal Poly Seeks Entries for First Ever Central California Angel Conference

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Startups could receive up to $200,000 in angel-backed investments by applying for the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s (CIE) Small Business Development Center (SBDC) 2018 Angel Conference.

Cal Poly Professor Named One of the World’s Most Impactful Scientific Researchers

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The head of Cal Poly’s Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences has been named to the 2017 list of Highly Cited Researchers. 

Professor Gregory Brown was included on the annual list produced by Clarivate Analytics, which recognizes the most frequently cited researchers spanning the globe in 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences, representing leading researchers whose papers have supported, influenced, inspired, and challenged others.
