Cal Poly’s Wind Bands to Feature Student Saxophone Quartet at Spring Concert on June 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Wind Bands’ Spring Concert will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 2, in Harman Hall of the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.  
For the concert titled “Earth and Sky: A Metamorphosis,” Cal Poly’s Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will perform a range of new works for wind band written in the past 20 years. 
The 65-member Wind Orchestra will begin the concert with “Night on Fire” by John Mackey, “To the Sky” by James Stephenson, and “Be Glad Then, America” by William Schuman.   

Cal Poly to Host California FFA State Finals Competition on May 5

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly will host more than 2,000 high school students from across the state at the annual California State FFA Finals competition Saturday, May 5.
Students will compete in 21 events throughout the day in categories including Agronomy, Dairy Cattle, Farm Business Management, Floriculture, Forestry, Livestock, Nursery Landscape, Marketing, Vegetable Crops, Vet Science, and Welding.
Judged events will be evaluated by a group of volunteers including Cal Poly faculty, staff and students, industry professionals, and community members.

Cal Poly to Host Women in Cybersecurity Leadership Forum on May 9

University’s California Cybersecurity Institute Will Also Host Training Event for Law Enforcement at Camp San Luis Obispo
SAN LUIS OBISPO — A panel of female leaders in technology from industry, government, law enforcement and higher education will speak at a Women in Cybersecurity Leadership Forum on May 9 at Cal Poly.

The panelists will cover a range of topics, including hackers; the state of security in government, industry and education; how cybersecurity trends impact the world; and the future of cybersecurity. Panelists will also discuss the work shortage in cybersecurity as well as cyber and liberal art majors. 

‘RSVP XXIII: Fatherland’ to be Staged May 29, 31 at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Music Department’s student production ensemble RSVP will stage the production “RSVP XXIII: Fatherland” at 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, May 29 and 31, in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion.
Marking the 23rd season of the transmedia series, this year’s production celebrates electroacoustic diversity, compositional risk and belonging.

Cal Poly to Present ‘All That Brass’ Concert May 25

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Brass Ensembles will present “All That Brass” at 5 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church.

The centerpiece for the concert is the Concerto for Brass and Percussion by Australian composer Paul Terracini. “The work ranges from boisterous to reverent and is a showcase for our amazing music students,” said Brass Ensemble Director Christopher J. Woodruff.

Cal Poly’s Campus Health and Wellbeing Hosting Second Annual Wellness Month

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Campus Health and Wellbeing department will hold its second annual Wellness Month throughout May.
The 31-day event, beginning May 1, celebrates the university’s wellness efforts with a variety of events and activities that focus on multiple aspects of healthy living, including: community well-being, social relationships, emotional health, career development, academic success, financial well-being and physical health. Students, faculty and staff can register individually or as a team to participate in activities and win prizes throughout the month.

Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble to Perform with Guest Artists May 26

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble and guest artists will perform a program of music and dance from the Eastern Mediterranean and larger region at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 26, in the Spanos Theatre on campus.
With a membership that represents a wide range of majors on campus and professions off campus, the Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble is a multi-instrumental orchestra and choir with vocal and instrumental soloists.

Cal Poly’s Mustang Media Group Wins 15 National Awards at CMBAM

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Mustang Media Group (MMG), the Cal Poly Journalism Department’s student-run media group, received national recognition with 15 awards during the College Media Business and Advertising Managers (CMBAM) annual 2018 awards ceremony.
Three of the awards — including two first-place titles — went to individual Cal Poly students.

Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department to Present Slasher Comedy ‘Hookman’ in May

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department will present Lauren Yee’s existential slasher comedy “Hookman” at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May 10-12 and 17-19, in the Spanos Theatre on campus.
“Hookman” follows a group of women as they navigate their freshman year of college, exploring significant issues confronting students today in a manner that is simultaneously familiar and surreal. “Transitioning from home to university can prove challenging — especially when facing homesickness, roommate relationships, and an urban legend stalking those around you,” said Josh Machamer, chair of Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department.

Cal Poly’s Architectural Engineering Program Wins National Award

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Architectural Engineering (ARCE) Department has earned the 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers Walter LeFevre Award, recognizing the program’s efforts to promote the highest professional standards in licensures, ethics and professionalism.
The national award was established in 2007 and is given annually to a civil, architectural or construction engineering program accredited by ABET (formerly known as Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). This is the first year Cal Poly’s ARCE Department has won the award — it was recognized with an honorable mention in 2016 and 2017.
