SAN LUIS OBISPO — Nearly 1,000 students are eligible to graduate in three ceremonies at Cal Poly’s 34th annual fall commencement Saturday, Dec. 9. Ceremonies are set for 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Cal Poly Recreation Center.
The theme for this year’s commencement is “Mustangs Forever.” The ceremonies will include a retrospective slideshow of the graduating students during the processional, the “proud pinning” ceremony and a celebratory surprise.

National organization singles out upper-division solar energy class and student-run food cooperative
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly has been recognized for its campus sustainability efforts by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education in an annual report honoring top-performing colleges and universities.
The 2017 Sustainable Campus Index singled out best practices in schools overall and in 17 sustainability impact areas, as measured by STARS — the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System. The report, released Nov. 6, also highlighted innovative and high-impact initiatives from institutions that submitted STARS reports in the 12 months prior to July 1, 2017.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Symphony will be joined by composer and mandolin soloist Jeff Midkiff for its Fall Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
Midkiff will perform his Concerto for Mandolin and Orchestra, “From the Blue Ridge.” Composed on commission in 2011, the concerto draws on the composer’s deep experience in the bluegrass musical tradition and reflects his own roots in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Collaborative Celebration to Include Local High School Choirs
SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Choirs will present the festive “Holiday Kaleidoscope” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in Harman Hall of the Performing Arts Center.
Cal Poly’s PolyPhonics, the University Singers and Early Music Ensemble will be joined on the concert by three local high school choirs: Cabrillo (Lompoc), Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. The groups will perform holiday favorites and new works.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly is competing this fall for the distinction of having the most popular campus blended hamburger in the nation, and voters will have the chance to win $1,000.
The Blended Burger Project: Campus Edition is a new, innovative program by the James Beard Foundation that allows college campuses to submit their own version of the “The Blend,” a burger made with a mixture of mushrooms and any ground meat of the chef’s choosing. The burger will be judged on three criteria: taste, nutrition and sustainability. The winner is determined by online voting.
