Professor Piirto Appointed to California Board
of Forestry and Fire Protection

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly Forestry Professor Douglas Piirto, of Atascadero, was appointed to the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection on April 9, 2007 by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Professor Piirto serves as a public representative on the board.

Since 2000, he has served as head of the Natural Resources Management Department at Cal Poly, where he has been a professor since 1985.

Professor Piirto has also served as a forest consultant with the U.S. Forest Service on the Sequoia National Forest (1995 to 2003) and Sierra National Forest (1990 to 1996). He previously served as a timber management officer and district silviculturist for the Pineridge Ranger District under the U.S. Forest Service from 1980 to 1985.

Prior to that, he was forester for the Kings River Ranger District under the U.S. Forest Service from 1977 to 1980. Piirto is a Registered Professional Forester in California and a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester. He Piirto has undertaken a number of forest and wood science research studies, for which he has developed peer reviewed published papers.
