Cal Poly Dedicates Alex G. Spanos Stadium

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly formally dedicated the newly renovated Alex G. Spanos Stadium with confetti, music, thousands of friends and fans of the university, and a big football win over Savannah State University Nov. 18

Kick off for the final home game of the season was officially delayed by 15 minutes as President Warren J. Baker honored Alex G. and Faye Spanos, as well as the entire Spanos family, for their unwavering commitment to Cal Poly. Baker also recognized Richard Andrews and Richard O’Neill for their ongoing support and dedication to the university and its athletics programs.

The Spanos’s gift is the largest single gift in the history of Cal Poly Athletics. In recognition of their generosity, the stadium was renamed the Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

In honor of Spanos, the Cal Poly Mustang Marching Band donned new band uniforms and spelled out “ALEX” while playing the university song, “Ride High.”

Spanos, owner of the San Diego Chargers and former drum major for the Cal Poly marching band, was represented by his son Dean Spanos at the ceremony.

During his speech, Baker noted on Spanos’ excitement upon first hearing about the stadium project. “He was on board immediately, committing significant funding for the stadium,” Baker said. “The entire Spanos family are philanthropists beyond measure.”

Dean Spanos, Richard Andrews and Richard O’Neill served as honorary team captains for the coin toss. Cal Poly went on to shut out Savannah State, posting the largest winning margin in a non-conference football game in 48 years with a 55-0 victory.
