Voters Pass Proposition 1-D, Bringing Funding to Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- California voters approved the $10.4 billion Proposition 1-D education bond in the November General Elections, which included $16.7 million in funding over two years for projects at Cal Poly.
Campus projects being funded with the $16.7 million in Prop 1-D money are:
-
The new Center for Science. Plans call for the new center to replace the 50-year-old "spider building" at the heart of campus. Design work begins in January 2007 for the new multi-story center, which will house chemistry, physics and soils science laboratories, research facilities and classrooms as well as chemistry and soil science offices. Approximately $4.5 million will go to this initial phase of the project.
-
Completion of the Center for Construction Excellence. Prop. 1D included $4.4 million in furniture and equipment for the new construction management building, which is currently under construction. The money will provide audio visual, communications and maintenance equipment and furniture.
-
Replacement of Anderson Pool. Design work begins in January 2007 with construction tentatively scheduled for summer of 2008. The $2 million pool will meet newer standards for academic use and will replace the existing 40-year-old pool. It will include two additional lanes, turbulence-reducing gutters and an energy-efficient heating system.
-
Upgrades for minor capital projects. Beginning in January 2007 Prop. 1D funds will be used to upgrade aging classrooms, labs and restrooms. Funds will also be used to meet Americans with Disability Act compliance; Kennedy Library renovations and multimedia technology installations begin and will take place over an 18 month period.
Finally, during the 2007-08 fiscal year, $3.9 million in Prop 1-D funding will be used to upgrade electrical, heating and mechanical systems across campus.
