Honor the Past, Be Part of the Future
Spanos Stadium, Memorial Plaza Taking Shape

photo of stadium and Bishop PeakThe old Mustang Stadium is in the middle of its physical transformation into the new Alex G. Spanos Stadium -- scheduled to be completed in time to kick off football season this fall. If you've ever wanted a personal piece of permanence on campus, the stadium project is offering a prime opportunity. In return for a donation covering the cost, alumni and friends can have a personally inscribed paver in the new Memorial Plaza. Prices range from $300 to $1000 depending on size.

Etch your mark in stone on the plaza -- or get friends together to honor a favorite teacher, coach or classmate. Memorial Plaza will be located on California Boulevard at the southwest corner of the stadium, and serve as its main entrance. The plaza will have at its heart 17 granite and copper columns, honoring the members of the 1960 Cal Poly football team killed in a plane crash on the way to a game.

The stadium field will also be named Mustang Memorial Field in their honor. "The crash was a tragic event," said President Warren Baker. "And it's part of the history of the university. It's important to remember those who were lost." For more details and the sign-up form for the plaza paver fund-raiser, click here.
