Cal Poly City and Regional Planning Department Receives Three Awards

SAN LUIS OBISPO -Cal Poly's City and Regional Planning Department received three 2006 Awards for Leadership and Service from the Central Coast Chapter of the American Planning Association. The department earned two awards for excellence and one for merit. The awards will be presented at an APA dinner Saturday, May 20, at 5:30 p.m. at the Sycamore Mineral Springs near Avila Beach .

graphic drawing of TempletonThe Templeton Community Plan and Downtown Urban Design Study received an Award of Excellence in the academic category for updating the Salinas River Area Plan. The project was prepared by the Community Planning Lab and the Urban Design Studio II during the 2004-05 academic year in cooperation with the San Luis Obispo County Planning and Building Department, Templeton Community Services District and Templeton Area Advisory Group. Plan preparation engaged the community in proactive planning for future development.

The department's annual publication "Focus" received an Award of Excellence in the educational project category for its mission to contribute to the planning field by sharing and fostering work by students, faculty and professionals.

"Focus" helps prepare students to build livable and healthy communities and educates the public about issues related to city and regional planning. Published annually for Cal Poly's Open House since 2004, the journal also included a special edition with proceedings of an international symposium on disaster recovery and risk management.

drawing of Redding marinaStudents received an Award of Merit in the academic category for their Park Marina Area Concept Plan. The class submitted ideas for the development and revitalization of a 27-acre parcel along the banks of the Sacramento River in Redding . The students' plan also served as a platform to initiate a public debate over the area's future.
