Cal Poly’s Mustang Media Group Wins More Than 20 Awards at College Media Business and Advertising Managers Annual Contest

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Mustang Media Group (MMG) took home more than 20 awards and placed second overall in the College Media Business and Advertising Managers annual contest.

Competing against more than 100 schools, Cal Poly’s student media organization earned five first-place awards and was named the College Media Design Program of the Year. There are 43 categories in the contest, and schools earn points from placing in the top four of each category.

The contest is also split into four sub-categories: Design, Sales, Public Relations/Marketing and Multimedia. MMG was second overall in the Sales and Public Relations/Marketing categories.

Erica Patstone, an art and design senior from Valley Center, Calif., was named Designer of the Year. This marks seventh time since 2007 that a Cal Poly student has won that honor. Darcie Castelanelli, an agribusiness junior from Lodi, Calif., was second in the Sales Representative of the Year competition, and business senior Ross Pfeiffer from Sunnyvale, Calif. was fourth in the Public Relations/Marketing Manager of the Year category.

MMG was also first in Best Back to School or Orientation Edition (2016 WOW), Best Advertising Campaign, Best Special Event (SLO-Fest) and Best Training Program.

“Our organization has been recognized as one of the top advertising and design programs in the nation over the past decade, and these awards confirm that and demonstrate the outstanding work product and individuals in our program,” said Paul Bittick, general manager of Mustang Media Group. “Being named the top design program in the nation is not a surprise, as we have now have had seven Designers of the Year, including Erica Patstone this year.”

Second-place honors included: Best Online Self-Promotion Ad; Best Audio Self-Promotion Ad; Best Fundraising Idea; Best Sponsored Content/Native Advertising; Best Audience Engagement Strategy; Best Sales Incentive Program; Best Sales Promotion Materials: and Best Sales Strategy for Special Section.

MMG also claimed two third-place awards and four fourth-place awards. In the Media Company of the Year competition, MMG finished second behind Central Michigan University.
The awards were presented at the College Media Business and Advertising Managers annual awards banquet April 1 in Fort Worth, Texas.
