Limited Edition Cal Poly Learn by Doing Book Available for Purchase May 19

Book profiles 22 Learn by Doing case studies, examines impact of university philosophy

SAN LUIS OBISPO – A group of Cal Poly faculty, staff and students have created a limited-edition book featuring 22 case studies of the university’s signature Learn by Doing educational approach, and 1,000 copies will be available for purchase beginning May 19.

“More than a Motto: The Meaning Behind Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing Signature” is dedicated to Phil Bailey, dean of Cal Poly’s College of Math and Science and a pioneering supporter of the university’s Learn by Doing movement. Authored by four Cal Poly colleagues, “More than a Motto” has been in development since 2013.

The team of authors includes Cal Poly’s Brian Greenwood, associate professor in Experience Industry Management; Dawn Janke, director of the University Writing and Rhetoric Center; Lorraine Donegan, professor in Graphic Communication; and Keri Schwab, assistant professor in Experience Industry Management.

The project also represents universitywide input and collaboration. Each case study was selected by an editorial board comprised of various campus stakeholders from Cal Poly’s six colleges and co-curricular and multidisciplinary activities.

"The Cal Poly community has been incredibly supportive of this project from the outset, and we appreciate the countless contributors who've helped make this book a reality," said lead author Brian Greenwood. "The impact Learn by Doing has on the campus culture is palpable, and we're excited to celebrate and highlight that which makes Cal Poly truly unique."

In the spirit of Learn by Doing, Cal Poly students played a significant role in the book’s design and production. Students in University Graphic Systems printed the book’s first 1,000 copies on its Heidelberg Press — the largest print job the students have ever undertaken.

There will be a book launch celebration for the campus community May 19, including a dedication ceremony for Bailey.

The book will cost $59 and can be purchased at the University Store, Cal Poly Downtown or online at [calpolystore.com]calpolystore.com.
