Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department to Present ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ Feb. 23-25 and March 2-4

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Join six precocious sixth-grade students as they compete to become spelling bee champion while reflecting on past trials, tribulations and triumphs in the Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department’s production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

The show will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 23-25 and March 2-4, in the Spanos Theatre on campus.

“This is a show that is not only about the individual paths to self-discovery for these characters but also the ways these kids collectively encourage each other’s journey,” Theatre Professor and Director Heidi L. Nees said. “There is also a nostalgia to this show that resonates with audiences. We all remember those pinnacle moments in our childhoods that seemed monumental at the time. This musical taps into those moments of heightened excitement, frustration, and anxiety that we all experience in our youth. Plus, it’s a fun show.”

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” features the work of Theatre and Dance Department students, faculty and staff: students Emily Brehm (costume design), Logan Smith (assistant set design) and Beatriz Perreira (assistant lighting design); Thomas J. Bernard (costume design advisor); Sarah Bryan (costume shop supervision); Al Schnupp (set design); and Clint Bryson (lighting design and technical direction).

William Finn wrote the music and lyrics of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” and Rachel Shrinking wrote the book. The show was conceived by Rebecca Feldman, with additional material by Jay Reiss. This production is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Tickets are $20 for the public and $12 for students, Cal Poly faculty and staff, and seniors. Parking is included in the ticket price. The show contains adult humor that may not be suitable for children under 12.

Tickets are available through the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To order by phone, call 805-SLO-4TIX (805-756-4849).

The performance is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department, the College of Liberal Arts and the Instructionally Related Activities Program.
