Cal Poly University Art Gallery to Exhibit Student-Built Furniture April 4-8
Gallery opening and reception set for April 4
SAN LUIS OBISPO —The Cal Poly University Art Gallery is proud to host “Vellum_13 Redux,” opening Tuesday, April 4, and running through Saturday, April 8.
The show is an abridged version of the 13th annual Vellum Furniture Design Exhibition and will feature some of the best pieces from the competition. A reception, open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. April 4.
The annual event, hosted by San Luis Obispo firm Vellum Design Build and Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED), is a juried competition among students of the college.
“This competition provides a forum for students to expeditiously exhibit their design passions with alacrity and a facility for craft,” said co-organizer Tom di Santo, an associate professor in Cal Poly’s Architecture Department. “It is amazing to see so many brilliant design/build pieces that the students achieve in such a short period of time.”
Two of the pieces in the exhibit are Space Architects Milano Grand Prize winners No. 45 by Matt Edwards of San Luis Obispo, and No. 163 by Riley Snyder of Las Vegas. These projects were Best in Show, and the winners will be sent this month to Milano for the Salone di Mobile in Italy, the most important furniture fair in the world. Another piece in the exhibit is RRM Cradle 2 Cradle Award winner No. 105 by Ellie O’Connor, of San Clemente, Calif., for most sustainably crafted piece.
The 13th annual Vellum Furniture Design competition was held in November 2016. The judges panel was comprised of artists, furniture designers, architects, CAED faculty members and laureates.
The University Art Gallery is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. It is located in room 171 in the Dexter Building (No. 34).
