Cal Poly Undocumented Student Working Group to Honor Immigrants on May 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Undocumented Student Working Group will hold an event to honor documented and undocumented immigrants and their contributions to the community at the UU Plaza stage from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 1.

Members of the Undocumented Student Working Group will join broader national efforts to support laborers on May Day by recognizing and advocating for all immigrants, regardless of their documentation status.

“Our economy relies on the labor of immigrants, particularly undocumented immigrants, who are often underpaid,” said Casey McCullough, a California State University (CSU) STEM VISTA AmeriCorps member supporting undocumented students at Cal Poly. “We want to raise awareness around the injustices faced by immigrants in the fields, in our schools, and in the community.”

Jane Lehr, a faculty member with the Undocumented Student Working Group, said, “This event is an opportunity for the Cal Poly and Central Coast communities to affirm our commitments to educational equity and opportunity for all students, regardless of their or their family’s immigration status, and to the development and implementation of fair and just immigration policies.”

The May 1 event will feature several speakers, including San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon and representatives from the Central Coast Coalition for Undocumented Student Success (CCC-USS).

Mayor Harmon and the San Luis Obispo City Council unanimously passed the “Welcoming City” resolution Tuesday, April 4. The resolution reaffirms that the San Luis Obispo Police Department will not enter into agreements with Immigration, Customs, and Enforcement (ICE), and will stand with all people in San Luis Obispo, regardless of their immigration status. Similarly, Cal Poly Police will not assist ICE in any immigration enforcement, in alignment with a July 29 memo issued by CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White.
