Cal Poly to Host 31st Annual CSU Research Competition April 28-29

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly will host some 240 graduate and undergraduate students from campuses throughout the California State University at the 31st annual Student Research Competition, Friday and Saturday, April 28 and 29.

The competition promotes excellence in scholarly research and creative activity by recognizing outstanding student accomplishments throughout the CSU — the nation’s largest four-year public university system, with nearly 480,000 students.

The CSU educates the most ethnically, economically and academically diverse student body in the U.S. at 23 campuses and eight off-campus centers stretching 800 miles from Humboldt in the north to San Diego in the south.

“The California State University Student Research Competition, initiated in 1985, features research achievements of undergraduate students, graduate students and recent alumni from all academic disciplines,” said Dean Wendt, Cal Poly’s dean of research. “Students from throughout the Golden State will submit written papers and make oral presentations before juries of professional experts from major corporations, foundations, public agencies and universities in California.”

Jurors represent a variety of disciplines and industries, including BiOWiSH Technologies, Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, the City of San Luis Obispo, French Hospital Medical Center, General Electric Co., MindBody, San Luis Obispo County, Monsanto Co., and Tenera Environmental Services.

Students will make presentations at 21 sessions in 10 different categories held in different classrooms in the business and education buildings. Three jurors in each session evaluate the presentations and written papers provided in advance to determine first- and second-place finishers in each session. Cash prizes are awarded.

Cal Poly will field 10 entries — nine individuals and a team of four women — from four of the university’s six colleges.

Top finishers will be announced at an awards ceremony set for noon on Saturday at in the Multi Activity Center at Cal Poly’s Recreation Center complex. All student participants receive a commemorative certificate.
