Cal Poly Announces 2016 Learn by Doing Scholar Award Winners

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly Mechanical Engineering Department faculty members Brian Self and James Widmann and Chemistry and Biochemistry Department faculty members Alan Kiste and Gregory Scott were named earned the university’s 2016 Learn by Doing Scholar Awards.

The annual awards, administered by Kennedy Library and a cross-college faculty committee, were established in 2014-15 to recognize outstanding scholarship within Cal Poly’s signature Learn by Doing pedagogy.

Self and Widmann received an award of $2,000 in recognition of their completed research, “Inquiry-Based Learning Activities in Dynamics.” Their work explores what activities develop students’ conceptual understanding and why. Their research, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, has received widespread validation, and they have engaged in extensive outreach to share their findings.

Kiste and Scott received an award of $1,000 for their planned research, “Cal Poly Studio Chemistry: An Examination of Student Outcomes,” which promises deeper understanding of how studio learning environments impact learning outcomes, including attitudes, knowledge, grades and retention. Their work could potentially enhance thousands of Cal Poly students’ learning.

The 2016 awardees will be recognized at a special library event in October.
