The Grand Detour to Take Drivers on Alternate Routes into Cal Poly

Construction projects will detour traffic June 15 – Aug. 31

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly is getting some work done. With more than 100 minor capital projects and six major capital projects underway, project coordinators are asking through campus traffic to avoid Grand Avenue and instead use two alternate routes as part of The Grand Detour, June 15 through August 31, 2016.  The Grand Avenue parking structure will remain open during the Grand Detour.

During The Grand Detour, campus through traffic will be diverted from Cal Poly’s Grand Avenue entrance to the preferred and fastest detour — via Highway 101 to California Boulevard. The second option is to use Santa Rosa Street to Highland Drive.

Inbound traffic on Grand Avenue will continue to have access to the Grand Avenue Parking Structure but will not be able to drive beyond the structure into campus. Vehicles leaving campus will continue to be able to use Grand Avenue, as a section of it will be designated for one-way, outbound-only traffic. Traffic utilizing Grand Avenue instead of the preferred alternate routes should expect delays during construction.

Student Housing South construction, the Vista Grande Replacement, Utilidor upgrades, and fire protection upgrades at Yosemite Hall all will be underway along Grand Avenue starting June 15. Grading is already underway to transform the former Grand Avenue parking lot into Student Housing South, which will house 1,475 students when completed in fall 2018.

The current Vista Grande student dining facility is being demolished this summer, to make way for a new three-story dining complex with six dining options, patio space, and lounge areas. The new dining complex is also expected to open fall 2018.

Also along Grand Avenue, between Pacheco Way and North Perimeter Road, crews will upgrade hot water pipes under the street surface. Again, traffic through this area will only be allowed to drive out of campus, not in — meaning there is no interior campus access via Grand Avenue to North Perimeter Road.

Detour maps and project information can be found at granddetour.calpoly.edu.
