Cal Poly Feb. 1 Entrepreneurship Forum to Focus on Social Change

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Entrepreneurial efforts that promote social change will be the focus of the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s (CIE) next forum, from 4:30 to 7:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, in the Performing Arts Center Pavilion.

The P.E.N. (Pitches, Exhibits, Networking) portion of the evening, from 5 to 6 p.m., will showcase three Cal Poly clubs and three local nonprofits that use entrepreneurial business techniques to make a social impact. Attendees will have the chance to vote for their favorite organization; the CIE will give $500 to the club or company with the most votes.

The evening’s panel discussion will address entrepreneurial approaches to social problems on global and local scales. Panelists include Alex Henige, a Cal Poly alumnus and founder of the Reduce. Reuse. Grow. plantable coffee cup; Caroline Duell, founder and president of Elemental Herbs; “Mr. Eco” founder Brett Edwards; and Monika Hudson, assistant professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at the University of San Francisco School of Management. Attendees may submit questions via Twitter for the panelists to discuss.

“Changing the world requires an innovative mindset,” said Tod Nelson, CIE executive director. “The CIE is giving students and community members the tools to meaningfully engage with the world’s problems.” CIE forums are designed to unite the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo entrepreneurial communities. Guests can network with local and national innovators, meet student entrepreneurs and learn more about the CIE resources and services.

Community members interested in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation at Cal Poly can become Pioneer Pass Holders with a pledge of $100. The annual pass gives members expedited registration and access to special industry events.

The Feb. 1 forum is free and open to the public; advance registration is required. For more information and to register, go to
