Cal Poly Fire Protection Engineering Among Top Online Engineering Graduate Programs

US News Ranks Master’s Degree Program 25th in Nation and Fifth in West

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s online master’s degree program in Fire Protection Engineering (FPE) was ranked among the best in the country according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2016 Best Online Programs rankings, released in January.

Cal Poly was tied for 25th place overall and ranked fifth among universities in the West in the Online Graduate Engineering Programs category.

U.S. News plans to include the online program rankings in both the “Best Graduate Schools 2016” and “Best Colleges 2016” guidebooks, which will be published later this year.

“Both on campus and online, Cal Poly’s Fire Protection Engineering graduate programs provide outstanding education that meets the needs of today’s professional seeking advanced degrees,” said Debra Larson, dean of Cal Poly’s College of Engineering.

For the 2015 Best Online Graduate Engineering Programs rankings, U.S. News compiled a list of public, private and for-profit colleges and universities in the U.S. that offer master’s degree programs online and then collected data from each of those schools. In calculating the rankings, U.S. News officials looked at student engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer reputation, admissions selectivity, and student services and technology.

Cal Poly offers a master of science degree and two graduate certificate programs in fire protection engineering — the only such programs offered on the West Coast. The discipline applies scientific and engineering principles to minimize the damage done by destructive fire.

The programs build on the Learn by Doing philosophy that has earned Cal Poly the best public master’s level university ranking in the West by U.S. News and World Report for 23 years in a row.

“Fire protection engineering professionals are in high demand, particularly on the West Coast,” said FPE Director Fred Mowrer.

Mowrer was a recent recipient of the John L. Bryan Mentoring Award, presented by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, which recognizes outstanding commitment to educating, training and advising fire protection engineers. Mowrer played a key role in the development of the FPE program, which was launched in 2010 and has grown in size and stature under his guidance.

More information about the program is available online at http://www.fpe.calpoly.edu/.
