Cal Poly Veterans Success Center to Host military salute at
Mustangs vs. Air Force Academy Men’s Soccer Match on Sept. 11

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Veterans Success Center is hosting a special military salute to the Sept. 11 anniversary at the non-conference men’s soccer game against Air Force Academy at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

The event is open to the public. Gates open at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. The game, the fifth time the teams have met, begins at 7 o’clock.

“We want to make this an opportunity to truly honor all of the military, so we are embracing all the armed forces on the Central Coast,” first-year head coach Steve Sampson said. “We really want this to be a special moment off the field in addition to showing them quality soccer on the field.

“The Air Force Academy is typically one of the best programs in the West, and we know it’s going to be incredibly exciting. A lot is going to be happening before the match, at halftime and then honoring the military after the match as well.”

Dr. Patrick C. O’Rourke, the director of Active Duty and Veterans Affairs at the Office of the Chancellor for the California State University system, will give a short halftime address.

O’Rourke is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel who served as a Special Forces commander, an associate dean, and a deputy chief of staff for operations at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center.

“We’re encouraging all members of the military, their families and veterans dependents from Vandenberg Air Force Base to Fort Hunter Liggett to attend this anniversary event,” said Everette Brooks, coordinator of the campus center that was dedicated in April. “We’ve also invited the Grizzly Youth Academy, with its 250 cadets and staff members, along with youth soccer leagues throughout the county and the American Legion.

“It will be a patriotic salute to 9-11 as well as a great soccer match featuring two top men’s teams. We’re proud to serve as a central point in the recognition of military service and the sacrifice of all service men and women. Veterans who attend can also connect with local support organizations.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for people 60 and older, and $6 for children, ages 2-13. Parking in Lots C-2, C-4 and C-7, off the California Boulevard campus entrance, is $6.
