Cal Poly Student Community Services’ Annual Homelessness Awareness Week Set for May 1-5

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Student Community Services will host its annual Homelessness Awareness Week for the 2011-2012 academic year May 1-5.

This year, the week will be dedicated to raising awareness and money and providing support and services for El Camino Homeless Organization, a local homeless support center.

Student Community Services operates through Cal Poly’s Student Life & Leadership and the Community Center.

Events for the week include:

Tuesday, May 1 – Face of Homelessness Presentation & Discussion

11:10-noon, Cal Poly, University Union, Room 204

Join in an interactive discussion about the youth transition period to adulthood from an Independent Living Program supervisor and an adult who experienced the system firsthand.

Wednesday, May 2 – Sleep Out

8:30 p.m. – 9 a.m., Cal Poly University Union

For every attendee that participates, $20 will be donated to ECHO on their behalf.

Thursday, May 3 – Farmer’s Market Booth

6 – 9 p.m., downtown San Luis Obispo

Participants will help raise awareness, publicize the week’s events and raise money for ECHO.

Friday, May 4 – Breakfast & Resume Workshop

9 – 11 a.m., Prado Day Center, San Luis Obispo

Students will serve breakfast and engage attendees in a career-building workshop.

Saturday, May 5 – Walk & BBQ

11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Participants will unite in an awareness walk and then enjoy a BBQ lunch.
