Cal Poly Student Selected for ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly Kinesiology student Mattie McGowen was one of 60 college students chosen to participate in the 2011 ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program.
Administered by the ExxonMobil Foundation, the summer jobs program provides exemplary students with eight-week paid internships at one of 267 nonprofit agencies in 12 states in which the company has significant operations.
A resident of Turlock, California, McGowen spent the summer interning with White Rock YMCA in Dallas, Texas. The organization’s focus is to implement Christian values through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. To help the organization achieve its mission, McGowan planned and facilitated teen camp activities, field trips and special events; attended nonprofit management seminars; and managed grant evaluations.
In addition to their daily internship duties, students developed vital career skills during professional development seminars, and collaborated to plan and implement an intern-led community service project benefiting the Creative Arts Center of Dallas.
“The Community Summer Jobs Program provides the ExxonMobil Foundation with a unique opportunity to support the important mission of local nonprofits and to help develop socially conscious young leaders as they prepare to enter the workforce,” said ExxonMobil Foundation President Suzanne McCarron. “We are proud to contribute to the significant impact these students and nonprofits will have in our community this summer and for many years to come.”
