Cal Poly Theatre and Dance Department Presents Comedy ‘Smash’
May 12-14, 19-21

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Theatre and Dance Department will present a production of Jeffrey Hatcher’s comedy “Smash” May 12-14 and 19-21.

Performances will beat 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May 12-14 and 19-21, along with one matinee performance at 2 p.m. May 21. All performances will take place in the Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre on the Cal Poly campus.

Directed by Professor Josh Machamer, the play focuses on millionaire socialist Sidney Trefusis, who leaves his new bride to pursue his plans of overthrowing the British government. Disguised as a common groundskeeper, Sidney reappears at an all girls’ college, intent on taking over the school and planting the seed of radical Socialism into the innocent minds of the country’s “marital supply chain.”

The only thing standing in his way is Agatha Wylie, resident collegiate rule-breaker (and cousin of Trefusis’ deserted wife), who ends up falling in love with Trefusis and his political ideas.

Witty and intelligent, “Smash” is part high-style comedy of manners, part political satire, part farce.  Disguise, revolution, badminton, Marx, pistols and the proletariat abound in this comic adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s novel “An Unsocial Socialist.”

The production utilizes the talents of more than 40 students, both as cast and crew. Even the audience becomes part of the production when they are provided the opportunity to partake in the revolution onstage.

This is the third show of three for the Theatre and Dance Department’s 2010-11 Mainstage Season.

Tickets are $12 to $15. For ticket information, call 805-756-2787.
