Cal Poly Architecture Department Students To Compete
In Sixth Annual Furniture Design Exhibition This Weekend, Oct. 29-31
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) is partnering with Vellum Design Build, a San Luis Obispo design and build firm, to host the sixth annual Vellum/CAED Furniture Design Exhibition. The competition and silent auction will benefit Cal Poly CAED students.
The entire event is scheduled Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 29 to 31 at Atmodsphere, 1119 Chorro St. in downtown San Luis Obispo. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
A preview of the show is scheduled for Thursday during Farmers Market in San Luis Obispo. An artists reception follows Friday from 6:30 to 10 p.m. The results of the judging will be announced at the Friday reception. The show will continue during the day Saturday.
With close to 170 entrants, this will be the largest Vellum/CAED furniture exhibit yet.
“The competition affords our students the opportunity to legitimize their work on a smaller scale,” said Tom Disanto, an associate professor in the Architecture Department.
“There is a long and storied tradition of architectural masters refining their design language in the context of furniture and industrial design. In the Vitra Design Museum Collection in Germany, more than one-third of their top 224 furniture pieces are actually designed by architects rather than furniture designers.”
