Cal Poly Women’s Water Polo Team Captures Fifth National Championship
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Women’s Water Polo team captured the Collegiate Water Polo Association National Championship on Sunday, May 3 with a victory over Notre Dame at the UC Davis Schaal Aquatic Center.
The 6-4 victory gave the Cal Poly team its fifth national championship – more than any other school in the nation. The team won the national title in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008.
Cal Poly entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the Pacific Coast Section tournament April 19. According to the Collegiate Water Polo Association, Cal Poly’s Sunday triumph marked the first time a team ranked No. 1 the week of the National Collegiate Club Championship had gone on to win the title.
Cal Poly reached the championship match with a 13-5 victory Friday, May 1, against Chico State and two wins Saturday, May 2 – 9-7 against the University of Michigan in the morning, followed by a 14-4 trouncing of the University of Pennsylvania in the evening. Sixteen teams took part in the tournament.
Sophomore Sarah Ur was named Cal Poly’s most valuable player for the tournament after scoring three goals in the championship contest. It was the second straight year she won the award. Also, junior Roxanne Eastwood scored twice, and senior Greta Carroll scored once.
In addition Ur, Eastwood and sophomore Erika Bigbie were named first team all-tournament, and Carroll was named second team all-tournament.
Cal Poly senior Dirk Camilli coached the women’s team to a championship for the second straight year. This year, he was assisted by sophomore Brandon Ross.
Cal Poly’s squad is a club team that competes from January through May.
