Engineering Professor George Bekey
Speaking on Military Robots March 10

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Can military robots obey the Geneva Conventions, the “Laws of War,” and the “Rules of Engagement?”

Cal Poly Professor George Bekey will give his answers during a talk on "Military Robots and Their Ethical Implications" Tuesday, March 10, at 7 p.m., in Room 510-B in the Kennedy Library.

Bekey is a research scholar in residence and adjunct professor at Cal Poly, as well as emeritus professor of Computer Science at the University of Southern California. At USC, he developed the Robotics Research Laboratory and the academic program in robotics.

His talk will focus on the ethical issues associated with robotic air, land and underwater military vehicles. What could happen if (or when) these robots, equipped with lethal weapons, are given the ability to use them without human supervision? Come find out.
