Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers
Honors Five Outstanding Members

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Five members of the Cal Poly Society of Women Engineers (SWE) were chosen to receive the Outstanding Women in Engineering and Technology award at SWE’s annual Evening With Industry banquet in late January. Presented with the cooperation of Hewlett-Packard, the winners of the award included:

Lisa Aukeman, an architectural engineering senior, is the vice president of the Cal Poly Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) club and has also served as vice president of Students in Free Enterprises (SIFE), an organization that focuses on assisting young entrepreneurs. She has worked as a summer intern at both KPFF Consulting Engineers and Lane Engineers, Inc.

Jessica Kiefer, an electrical engineering graduate student, has held several positions in SWE including collegiate membership coordinator, vice president of campus relations and treasurer. She also developed a 30-page instruction booklet for elementary schools to help young students learn about electrical engineering and received a Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of America. Kiefer has spent the last three summers working as an intern at Cisco Systems, Google and National Semiconductor.

Katie Robinson, a biomedical engineering senior, is president of the Biomedical Engineering Society and student chair of the Biomedical/General Engineering Student Fee Allocation Committee. She also volunteers at Beyond Shelter, which sponsors art projects for children at homeless shelters. Robinson has worked as an intern for the past two summers at Boston Scientific.

Sheila Shideh, a civil engineering senior, organized National Engineers Week activities while serving on the Engineering Student Council and is a founding member of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. She is also social director for the Cal Poly Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the Cal Poly Persian Club. Shideh has worked as an intern at both Whiting-Turner Contracting and Brinderson Engineering.

Nicole Stromsness, a civil engineering senior, helped lead the multi-million dollar campaigns to expand the Cal Poly Recreation Center and refurbish the University Union as chair of the University Union Advisory Board. An intern at Parsons Engineering for the past two summers, Stromsness has also served as chair of events on the Engineering Student Council and was a member of the Campus Fee Advisory Council.
