SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly architecture professor Stephen J. Phillips has received residential fellowships for postdoctoral research from the Getty Center and the Smithsonian Institution.

Architecture Department Head Henri T. de Hahn said, “This is extraordinary news. We are proud to have Cal Poly’s Teacher-Scholar model recognized by such international authorities as the Smithsonian and the Getty and we are excited that Professor Phillips will be able to share his research and experiences with his students.”

The Getty Residential Fellowship
The year-long fellowship was awarded by the Getty Research Institute to support Phillips’ postdoctoral research related to the Getty’s annual theme for 2009-2010, “The Display of Art.” Areas of interest in the selection process included: the relationship of display to the interpretation of an object as art, the study of museums and their history of display, and the relationship of display to conservation and interpretation.

As part of the fellowship, Phillips will be provided with an apartment at the Getty Center, access to special collections and support from the Getty’s world-renowned curators, librarians and staff.

The focus of Phillips’ research fellowship will be “Elastic Architecture: Frederick Kiesler’s Research Practice.”

The Smithsonian Residential Fellowship
Phillips was awarded a 6-month residential fellowship by the Smithsonian American Art Museum to support full-time independent postdoctoral research.

Phillips will be provided with office space at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, adjacent to the Smithsonian museums and libraries, the Library of Congress, the National Archives, and the National Gallery of Art.
