Cal Poly’s Hearst Lecture Series Spring Events Run April 22-May 27

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly announces the 2008-09 Hearst Lecture Series spring season “Research Practice” featuring a symposium of world-renowned architects, urban designers, historians and theorists discussing architecture research and its relationship to design practice on May 8.

Hosted by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the Hearst Lecture Series highlights the work of distinguished designers and architects. The free public lectures are made possible through a grant from the Hearst Foundation.

Events in the spring lecture series are listed in chronological order:
Wednesday, April 22, 4 p.m.-Geoffrey Payne, principal and founder of award-winning housing and development firm Geoffrey Payne & Associates, will discuss his latest urban design and city regional planning projects, in the Berg Gallery, Room 105.

Friday, April 24, 4 p.m.-David Leatherbarrow, professor of architecture and chair of the Graduate Group in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, will lecture on history and theory of architecture and the city. The presentation will be in the Business Rotunda, Room 213.

Friday, May 8, 1 to 6 p.m.-Internationally acclaimed architects, urban designers, historians and theorists will be featured in a symposium on the history and theory of architecture design research relevant to innovation in contemporary building design, urban theory and technology practices. Moderated by Stephen Phillips, director of the Hearst Lecture Series and assistant professor of architecture, the event will be held in the Business Rotunda, Room 213.

Symposium speakers will include:
Beatriz Colomina, director of Graduate Studies Ph.D. Program and Director Program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University School of Architecture.

Mark Wigley, dean of Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

Raveevarn Choksombatchai, associate professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley and founder of Loom studios.

Jeffrey Inaba, director of C-Lab, an architecture, policy and communications think tank at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and the Features Editor of Volume Magazine.

Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott, partners of IwamotoScott Architecture. Iwamoto is associate professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley and Scott is an associate professor at the California College of the Arts.

Ed Keller, is founder and director of MediaSCAPES masters degree program at the Southern California School of Architecture.

Friday, May 15, 4 p.m.-Rafi Segal, who currently leads urban planning at KPF architects, New York, will lecture on "The Urban Condition." The presentation will be in the Business Rotunda, Room 213.

Wednesday, May 27, 4 p.m.-Guy Nordenson, a structural engineer specializing in tall buildings, will discuss his latest engineering projects. His office designed the prototype for the 2,000 foot tall World Trade Center Tower 1 that is now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The presentation will be in the Berg Gallery, Room 105.
