Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble to present “Monteverdi’s Masterpieces! The Splendor of the Italian Madrigal”

SAN LUIS OBISPO - The Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble will give their spring concert, titled “Monteverdi’s Masterpieces! The Splendor of the Italian Madrigal,” on Saturday, May 23, at 8 p.m. in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.

The 16-member Early Music Ensemble will present an overview of the compositional styles offered throughout the eight books of madrigals composed by the Italian master Claudio Monteverdi.

Cal Poly Director of Choral Activities Thomas Davies will give an overview of Monteverdi’s life, and talk briefly about the seven madrigals to be performed. The ensemble will demonstrate various compositional devices used in each madrigal, followed by complete performances of each work.

Monteverdi’s madrigals fall into a category of great compositions the style of which is both of the late Italian Renaissance and the beginning of the Italian Baroque. His works are a grand culmination of the Italian Madrigal tradition.

Tickets are $12 for the public and $8 for seniors and students, on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends. To order online, visit www.pacslo.org; by phone, call 805-SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787); or by fax, dial 805-756-6088.
