Cal Poly Open House Concert to Feature Music from Stage, Screen and Ballet April 19
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Three Cal Poly music ensembles featuring 100 of Cal Poly’s finest student musicians will perform at this year’s Open House Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center. The Cal Poly Symphony, University Jazz Band and Cal Poly Wind Ensemble will be performing in the show, titled "The Stage! The Screen! The Ballet!"
The Cal Poly Symphony, conducted by David Arrivée, will perform selections from one of Sergei Prokofiev's most popular and enduring works, the ballet "Romeo and Juliet." This masterpiece for full symphony orchestra includes "The Dance of the Knights," "Madrigal," "Masks," and "Romeo at the Grave of Juliet."
During the University Jazz Band’s segment of the concert, a 1940s Looney Tunes cartoon -- with music from the composition “Powerhouse” -- will be screened, followed by the band’s live performance of the piece. The music is the most famous piece by quirky jazz composer Raymond Scott, who wrote many jazz compositions for cartoons throughout the ’40s and ’50s. The University Jazz Band, directed Cal Poly Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler, will also play several other selections from the rich tradition of jazz in film and television.
The Cal Poly Wind Ensemble will feature organist Paul Woodring performing on the Forbes Pipe Organ selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" and Jaromir Weinberger’s “Polka and Fugue for Wind Ensemble and Organ." The Cal Poly Wind Ensemble is conducted by William Johnson and Christopher Woodruff.
The concert will conclude with Johan Wagenaar’s new work for winds and percussion, "Taming of the Shrew."
