Organist William Peterson to Perform at the PAC April 6
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly Arts presents renowned organist WILLIAM PETERSON on Sunday, April 6 at 3 p.m. in the Cohan Center, performing in the third offering in the popular Forbes Pipe Organ Recital series.
The extensive afternoon program will include selections from Die Kunst der Fuge (Art of Fugue, BWV 1080) and Pièce d’orgue (BWV 572) by Johann Sebastian Bach; Praeludium in G by Nicolaus Bruhns; Malle Sijmen Onder Een Linde Groen by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck; Nicolas de Grigny’s Recit de tierce en taille/Dialogue; Alexandre Guilmant’s Deo Gratias/Fugue et Oraison; Souvenir by John Cage; Tom Flaherty's new work, Fanfare; and Choral No. 1 in E Major by César Franck.
William Peterson is the Harry S. and Madge Rice Thatcher Professor of Music and College Organist at Pomona College in Claremont, CA. He received the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley after having received B.A. and B.M. degrees from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he studied organ with David Boe and harpsichord with Fenner Douglass.
As a performer, he has played concerts in recent years in many parts of the United States. Peterson has performed a number of all-Bach recitals at various locations, including complete performances of Bach's Dritter Theil der Clavierübung. His performance in St. Paul, Minnesota of Tournemire's Symphonie sacrée, one of the composer's largest works for organ, was broadcast on "Pipedreams" (Minnesota Public Radio).
As a scholar, Peterson has worked extensively on French organ music of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He is co-editor, with Lawrence Archbold, of “French Organ Music from the Revolution to Franck and Widor” (University of Rochester Press, 1995) now in its third printing.
Among recent conference papers are "Storm Fantasies for the Nineteenth-Century Organ in France" (Denton, TX) and "Cavaillé-Coll's Late Style Reconsidered" (Oberlin, OH).
In October of 2002, he played the Inaugural Concert on the Hill Memorial Organ built by C.B. Fisk for Bridges Hall of Music at Pomona College.
General public tickets for the performance range from $14 to $26, with student discounts available on all seats, and may be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
