Cal Poly's College of Architecture and Environmental Design Open House Highlights

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Cal Poly's College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) will offer a number of free special events to the public during the university’s annual Open House, Friday and Saturday, April 18-19.

Friday, April 18

Michael A. Berk, professor in the School of Architecture at Mississippi State University, will lecture in the areas of digital media and information design, factory-built housing, and sustainable architecture. Berk’s current research involves the design and manufacture of the GreenMobile™ unit, which would provide low-cost housing for disaster-stricken residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The lecture will take place in the Business Rotunda, Bldg. 3, Room 213, from 1:30-3 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, April 18-19

Cal Poly’s Solar House will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the C-7 parking lot. In 2005, the student-designed house took third place in the National Solar Decathlon Competition in Washington D.C., where teams of students competed to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered house.

CAED alumni and friends are invited to attend the Poly Royal Brunch and the college’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, which will take place in Vista Grande Restaurant at 9:30 a.m. Tickets are $20 and complimentary parking will be provided. To register, visit www.caed.calpoly.edu/caedpolyroyalbreakfast.htm, or call 756-7432. Registration forms and payment must be received by Friday, April 11.

Entries for the 2008 Design Village Competition “Mission to Mars: Sojourn to Station” will be on display 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Poly Canyon. Designed by teams of students from across the country, submissions must be built in 12 hours or less, utilize no plugged-in electricity, and provide shelter to the team for the weekend. Entries are judged on craftsmanship, sustainability, design excellence, suitability to the theme, and public response. A free, ongoing shuttle service will be provided on Poly Canyon Road at N. Perimeter.
