Cal Poly Students Collect More Than 400 Gifts for Low-Income Children

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Organizers of the Cal Poly Holiday Gift Drive 2008 collected more than 400 gifts, valued at a total of more than $4,500, to give to local low-income children and teens for Christmas.

The drive, put on by the Student Community Services program in Cal Poly's Student Life and Leadership office, ran from Nov. 10 to Dec. 10. Donors took tags off a tree in the Student Life and Leadership office, which included a wish list for participating children.

Organizers collected the gifts last week and gave them to several local groups and agencies, including: Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County, Pacheco Elementary School in San Luis Obispo, the Housing Authority of the City of San Luis Obispo, the county Department of Social Services, and the Economic Opportunity Commission.

Those groups will hand the gifts out to their respective recipients for the holiday.

For more details on the gift drive, contact organizer Austin Helton at 805-756-5834 or ahelton@calpoly.edu.

The annual Holiday Gift Drive is one of several programs and annual events through which Cal Poly students volunteer in the community. For more information, visit the Cal Poly Student Community Services office's Web site at http://studentlife.calpoly.edu/SCS.
