Cal Poly Investigating Student Death
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly is currently cooperating in the San Luis Obispo police department’s investigation of a possible alcohol-related death of an 18-year-old Cal Poly freshman
At approximately 6 a.m. the student was found in a non-responsive state by friends who attended a Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) party at a local residence. After attempting to administer CPR, the students called 911. Emergency officials could not revive the student.
Cal Poly has suspended the SAE fraternity charter. The national chapter of SAE has also suspended all Cal Poly SAE chapter activity until further notice.
Cal Poly is fully cooperating with local police as the investigation continues. In addition, the vice president of SAE’s national board and the SAE regional director will meet with Cal Poly officials tonight to discuss next steps in the investigation process.
“This is a tragedy and we are all heartbroken over the loss of a valued member of our community. Our hearts go out to the family,” said Cornel Morton, vice president for student affairs at Cal Poly. “We are working closely with the family and anticipate meeting with them shortly, to offer our assistance as they navigate this difficult time.”
