April 28, 2008 Contact: Michele Abba Cal Poly’s Craig Russell, Thomas Davies to Lead SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble will give its Spring Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 24, in Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Titled “From Serra to Sancho: Exploring the Music of the California Missions,” the 11-voice ensemble will present music from the California Missions, with emphasis on works composed by Juan Bautista Sancho, who lived and composed at Mission San Antonio. Cal Poly Music Professor and noted California mission music scholar Craig Russell will talk about the musical selections before each is performed. Works to be performed include various Mass movements composed by Sancho, as well as several works of unknown authorship found in the mission archives in Santa Clara. All of the pieces have been edited, and in some cases completed, by Russell. The Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble will be joined by a small instrumental group, including Russell on baroque guitar. Cal Poly Music Professor Thomas Davies will conduct the performance. Tickets are $12 for the public and $8 for seniors and students. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO- ARTS (756-2787). Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket office will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given to those who buy tickets to five or more events.
