Cal Poly Showcases Outstanding Works of Swiss Architects
Sept. 24 through Oct. 12
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Bold images of Swiss architectural design will be on display this fall at Cal Poly, with “Ticinese Architecture in the World: Milestones and Protagonists 1970-2003.” The traveling exhibition will be located in the Gallery at the Commons, second floor, in the Cal Poly Robert E. Kennedy Library.
An opening reception sponsored by the Consulate General of Switzerland, San Francisco is scheduled in the Gallery from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 24. The free and public exhibition can be seen during regular library hours through Oct. 12.
The drawing and photographic exhibition showcases works that have made Ticinese architects famous in their homeland and influential outside Switzerland. Featured architects include Mario Botta, Mario Campi, Aurelio Galfetti, Bruno Reichlin, Fabio Reinhardt, Flora Ruchat-Roncati, Luigi Snozzi and Livio Vacchini.
“Swiss architecture has always sought a balance between tradition and innovation, between the essential and the exceptional,” said Cal Poly Architecture Professor and Department Head Henri de Hahn. “Beyond its formal minimalist attitude is more a consequence of a search for an economy of mediums, particularly in the Italian and German speaking regions of Switzerland. We are pleased to encourage such formative voices within the profession.”
The exhibition is presented by Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies, the Virginia Tech Washington-Alexandria Architecture Consortium, and the Pro-Helvetia Arts Council of Switzerland. It is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Robert E. Kennedy Library and Architecture Department and the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.
