Cal Poly Announces New Architectural Engineering Department Head

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design has named Allen C. Estes to head the Architectural Engineering Department.

Estes joins the Cal Poly faculty after serving as director of the Civil Engineering program at the United States Military Academy for the past seven years. He recently retired from the Army after spending more than 28 years as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers.

Estes graduated from West Point in 1978.  He received his master’s degrees in structural engineering and construction management from Stanford University and his doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Colorado. He also holds a master’s in business administration from Long Island University, a master’s in Military Art and Science from the Army Command and General Staff College, and a master’s in National Security and Public Policy from the Naval War College.

Estes has authored more than 60 papers, articles and book chapters on the subjects of structural reliability, life-cycle cost, structural optimization, and engineering education.  He serves on several committees with and is an active participant in the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, the International Association of Bridge Management and Safety, and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

“My vision is for the Cal Poly Architectural Engineering program to be widely recognized as the nation’s premier undergraduate structural engineering program where the department is a model learning community,” said Estes.

A professionally registered engineer in Virginia, Estes is also the technical editor for Infrastructure and Structure Engineering, an internationally recognized technical journal on maintenance, management and life-cycle design.

The Architecture Engineering Department is the oldest in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design and the only program of its kind west of the Rockies. The department will celebrate its 60th anniversary in the 2007-2008 academic year. For more information on ARCE, visit www.arce.calpoly.edu/.
