Hearst Lecture Series Brings World-Renowned Designers to Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO -The Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design's Hearst Lecture Series continues this winter with "PAN PACIFICA." The weekly talks on campus will highlight the work of designers and architects from California, Washington, and China.

Kalvin Platt of SWA Group presents the next lecture on Friday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m., in the Business Rotunda. His presentation entitled "Fifty Years of Design - The Trajectory of the SWA Group" focuses on more than 50 years of projects at SWA, their current work, and what the firm expects for the next 50 years. Platt is consulting principal and chairman the SWA Group, widely recognized as one of the world's leaders in the fields of planning, landscape architecture and urban design.

Other lectures in the winter series include:

* Thursday, Feb. 1, 8 p.m., Business Rotunda: Cal Poly architecture alumnus Joey Shimoda will lecture on his work with Shimoda Design Group, which he established in 1999. The Shimoda Design Group has a core staff of six and currently has projects underway in Los Angeles, Dallas and Phoenix.

* Friday, Feb. 2, 4 p.m., Business Rotunda: Cal Poly landscape architecture alumnus Eric Pfeiffer of Pfeiffer Design Lab, will talk about his furniture and industrial design work. He is the author of the publication "Bent Ply" and designer of the Offi Mag Table, Wave Desk, and Perch Lounge. (Both Shimoda and Pfeiffer will be jurors in the Third Annual Vellum/Architecture Department Furniture Design Competition, to benefit Cal Poly students, Feb. 2 and 3.)

* Friday, Feb. 9, 4 p.m., Philips Hall of the Performing Arts Center: Cal Poly architecture alumnus John Trautman will discuss his award-winning work. Trautman recently designed his second building on the Cal Poly campus, the Bonderson Project Building in the College of Engineering. A tour of the building is available upon request.

* Friday, Feb. 23, 4 p.m., Business Rotunda: Tom Wiscombe will discuss the work of his studio EMERGENT. In 1999, Wiscombe founded EMERGENT, which specializes in researching issues related to building materials, technology, and systems used in the built environment. Based in Los Angeles, Wiscombe is considered one of the most significant young architects of his generation.

* Friday, Mar. 2, 4 p.m., Business Rotunda: The winter series concludes with brothers Mark and Peter Anderson discussing the work of their office, ANDERSON + ANDERSON. They started the firm as a design-build construction company in 1984 and have since grown into a experienced architecture firm.
